The Company Got Its Name before Being Registered

Microsoft officially got registered in 1976 in New Mexico. The company was named by Bill Gates. He used the word micro-soft in his letter to Paul Allen in 1975. At that time the company was not established. The word Microsoft is a portmanteau. The word “micro” is taken from microcomputers and the word “soft” from software. Hyphen was removed from the name at the time of registration back in 1976.

Microsoft windows 1.0 was released in November 20, 1985. Exactly 10 years after the establishment of the company. Windows 1.0 was a 16-bit operating system.
