Facts About Coldplay – Things You Need To Know

Singer and keyboardist Chris Martin formed the British Rock band Coldplay in 1996. The band has sold millions of records since its creation. Being Coldplay fans we know that they have always put music first instead of personal lives. Their haunting music and imaginative lyrics has earned them millions of fans. Here are a few facts about Coldplay you should know as a super fan.

Different Names of Band

Before Chris named his band Coldplay, he tried different names – firstly it was “Pectoralz” and then renamed band, “Starfish” in 1997.

Members of Band

The band consists of four members. Lead singer Chris Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, drummer Will Champion and bassist Guy Berryman.

Buckland and Chris met at UCL

Lead guitarist Jonny Buckland and Chris Martin met at University College London (UCL) in 1996 where they came up with the idea of making their own rock band while still at UCL.

Debut Album Name

The debut album of Coldplay was “Parachutes” because the band built its reputation as depressing. However, originally the album was going to be named, “Don’t Panic” and then “Yellow”. The band recorded their debut album in four different studios. 

Drummer Champion   

Champion had no prior experience with drums. When he became a part of the band.

Chris declined the offer from Tim

Tim Rice-Oxley of Kean offered Chris to work with his band as a keyboardist. But Chris declined the offer because he wanted to focus on his own band.

Title of Forth Album

The title of the fourth album of Coldplay was, “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends”. These words were taken from a painting drawn by a Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo.

The band didn’t allow to use their songs

Big brands like Gatorade and Coca-Cola approached the band to take approval to use their songs, “Trouble” and “Yellow” in advertisements. But the band declined the offers.

How he get the idea to name their hit song    

When the band was trying to name one of his albums, Chris suddenly spotted a yellow cover book. From there he got the idea to name Coldplay’s hit song “Yellow”.

UK Top 40

The signature track of Parachute “Yellow” reached 4th spot in the UK Top 40. While their first hit “Shiver” from the album Parachute secured 35th position in the list.

Brit Awards

The band won two very famous Brit awards for the category Best British Album and Best British Group.

Collaboration

Chris Martin collaborated with Rihanna on Princess of China. After doing the duet, Christ explained he had no desire to collaborate with any other singer. Chris said: “Rihanna was the only name on the list. It’s the only duet we have done and the only one we wanted to do”. Though Chris had guest appearances on some tracks.

Gift of Elephant Head Suit  

In 2011, Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland were invited on the Ellen show. Chris and Jonny gave her the head of the elephant suit that they used in the song “Paradise”. Obviously, Ellen is not going to forget this gift.

President’s Favorite

Chris Martin admitted that Barack Obama listens to their song on his iPod. It means the band is doing right.

Six Singles in one Album  

Coldplay’s one album X & Y had six singles. These are “Talk”, “What If”, “The Hardest Part”, “Fix You”, “Speed of Sound” and “White Shadows”.  

Inspiration for “The Scientists”

The inspiration for the track “The Scientist” was from George Harrison’s song “All Things Must Pass”. “The Scientist” was part of the collection, A Rush of Blood to the Head.

Donations to Campaigns

The track 2000 miles from The Pretenders was covered by the band. The earnings from the song were donated to campaigns like Stop Handgun Violence and Future Forests.

Performance at Steve Jobs Memorial

 The band performed at the memorial of Steve Jobs to thank him for his continuous support.

Mylo Xyloto

The anthology is about “addiction, escape, love, OCD and working for someone you dislike”.
