Where it all started

Just like McDonalds, Mickey Mouse and Coca Cola, Budweiser is not American. Adophus Busch was the creator of Budweiser beer. Well, this name doesn’t sound American at all. Adophus was from Germany. In 1857, he moved to the United States bringing with him latest brewing techniques. Using those techniques he opened the Anheuser-Busch Brewery with his father-in-law Eberhard Anheuser in 1864.

Adophus created Budweiser in 1895 in Budweis – a famous place in Czech Republic. Now the Budweiser drink is sold worldwide.

How did Budweiser become an Americans Choice?

When Adophus started his company, at that time, Americans used to drink lighter lagers. But he didn’t focus on that. Budweiser was the first pasteurized beer in the United States. This process increases the life of beer. After Anheuser-Busch Company, pasteurization became a standard practice for other breweries. Moreover, the company changed its beer making process and maintained the limit of alcohol (0.5 %) in the beer.

How did it get the name?

A trip to Budweis region of Czech Republic became an inspiration for Adophus to name his beer. And he named the beer as “Budweiser” meaning “of Budweis”. But the problem was that in those days beers were named after the region where they brewed in. Furthermore, the region of Budweis also had the original Czech beer. To solve this issue, Anheuser-Busch started to sell its beer as “Czechvar” in North America. Whereas in other European countries it is sold as “Bud”. In Ireland and the United Kingdom it is sold in its original name. New Zealanders know it with the name “Buudvar”.
