Nazca Lines Facts – Find Facts About Nazca

Nazca Lines are located at a distance of 400 Kilometers in South of Lima, Peru. The Nazca Lines are shallow snick on the Nazca desert built by Nazca culture in 500 or 800 BCE. The lines are called geoglyphs because of their geometric design. These lines make the animal shapes such as monkey etc.

The Nazca Lines on the Peruvian coast are so mysterious that they are sometimes called “Alien Runway Marks”.  The Peruvian plateau is considered to be some kind of an alien airport. Palpa Mountain is few miles away from Nazca Lines. The top of mountain is so flat that it seems like it was cut off by a machine.

Do you know what a giant hummingbird, an astronaut, and a monkey have in common? Let’s explore one of the greatest mysteries of the world. A green mirage is present in the center of desert. This area is bordered by mountains, cotton fields and orchards. Nazca town was not discovered until 1901.

Labyrinth

Normally, labyrinth are drawn for religious purpose. But many researchers have claimed the presence of labyrinth in Nazca desert. These lines are random with no specific pattern. These lines are more obvious when viewed from the air. The labyrinth was created for people to walk for spiritual insight.

Perennial Lines

The perennial lines are more superficial as compared to other lines. They are 30 cm deep. However, the weather conditions are suitable for preservation, and the markings can live on. Anyhow, a sudden climatic change that results in heavy rains will be the reason for severe damage to these markings.

Why Were They Made?

No one knows the exact purpose of these spectacular lines. According to some theories, these lines are ‘Alien markings’. While other explain their purpose for religious significance which Nazca people used for reverent rituals. But there is no evidence strong enough to support them.  The most widely accepted one, nevertheless, is that the Nazca Indians made these markings as an offering to please the Gods and attract them into giving water. Well, this assumption makes sense because the area is windless and dry. Due to these properties of the area these lines existed for more than 2000 years.

Other Nazca Lines facts can only be really appreciated from the air; when viewed from the ground, it is nearly unlikely to make out the figures and geometric patterns.

Nazca Lines Feature Animals

Understanding the significance of these lines is complex. Scientist Robin Edgar and Astronomers concluded that there are more 70 lines that feature various animals such as monkey, humming bird, whale, jaguar, lizard, fish, spider, dog. Other lines are simple and geometric. The scientist explained that these lines were created to please the “Eye of God”. This description makes sense as there had been enormous number of solar eclipses occurred over the Peru area.

Robin Edgar also believed this as a solar eclipse would resemble the pupil and iris looking down on the people below. It is assumed that the purpose of creation of these lines is to make them visible for the eye in the sky.

Chariots of the Gods

A book “Chariots of the Gods” written by Erich Von Daniken highlight these magnificent lines. As stated by this book these lines are landing strips for aliens.

Moreover, Erich Von felt that the designs were so complicated and covered such a considerable distance that humans could not have made them due to the size of the lines, lack of machinery and tools. In addition to this, these lines are not visible from the air.

Nazca Geoglyphs

It is believed that there natural forces which have influenced on the lines. But there is deforestation in huge area of Peruvian desert so pollution is affecting the Nazca lines. No matter what the reason is for the creation of the Nazca lines in the Peruvian desert, ancient and skilled people collaborated to leave an impressive record for posterity.

What to See

The area of the Peruvian desert, where the Nazca lines were drawn is called Pampa Colorado – Red Plain. It is 15 miles wide and runs some 37 miles equal to the Andes and the Pacific Ocean. Although deserts are sandy but Peruvian desert is not. The upper surface of desert comprises dark red stones while the soil beneath is of lighter shade. Below the darker layer there appears lighter subsoil.

Some Nazca Lines are simple straight lines while some have geometric shape featuring animals, plants and humans. Few shapes are:

  • Tree
  • Round-headed human (known as “the astronaut”)
  • Spider
  • Hummingbird
  • Another human figure
  • Monkey
  • Condor
  • Hands

The Nazca lines were made during the pre-Hispanic period. Nazca lines are not ordinary lines, these lines make about 300 characters.
